I’m extremely excited to introduce this artist! As a lover of jazz, all things mellow, and all things soulful, this artist has managed to to take the contemporary jazz world to new levels. He is a sharp and intelligent visionary when it comes to his artistry and a skillful pianist when it comes to his craft. The GRAMMY awarded Robert Glasper!
I was first introduced to the work of this talented artist several years ago by my biggest personal jazz influencer…none-other than my big-brother (shout-out)! Since my initial introduction to the musical genius that is Mr. Glasper, I have not taken my eyes or ears off of his work. I have been amazed by his talent, from the original and evocative composition “Chant” from his 2005 debut Canvas, to his Herbie Hancock rendition of “Maiden Voyage” on his 2007 album In My Element, and to his most recent works, Black Radio and Black Radio 2, boasting star-studded collaborations from artists across the neo-soul and hip-hop genres including Bilal, Common, Jill Scott, Musiq Soulchild, Erykah Badu, Lalah Hathaway, and Marsha Ambrosius just to name a few!
The Houston, Texan native started honing his musical craft in the church, where he started playing at the ripe age of 12. Undoubtedly influenced by his mother who also sang jazz and blues professionally in addition to playing the piano! He went on to enhance his skill at the Houston High School for the Performing and Visual Arts, where he further developed his love for hip-hop, rock, R&B and pop. Later, he continued his formal education at the New School for Jazz and Contemporary Music in New York City. From these early launch pads, he went on to expand connections with many well-established artists taking on jazz spots, collaborating with neosoul artists like Bilal as well as other hip-hop and R&B artists, and even touring as musical director with some influential names.
His work has undoubtedly opened the world to the broader significance of jazz and its many forms all-the-while bringing together a variety of peoples and generes. From the young to the old, traditional to the modern, black, white, yellow and everything in-between. Go to any of his concerts and you will see the diversity of sound in his music, displayed in the melting-pot of faces that love his work!

Today’s featured song is a lovely rendition of “So Beautiful”, performed by The Robert Glasper Trio (on piano Robert Glasper, drummer Chris Dave, and bassist Vicente Archer). Be sure to listen all the way to the end for a simple truth from the man, Musiq Soulchild.
